The nursing field is no easy one, and often described as the grunt work of the medical field, though nurses have to be in just as tip-top shape as the doctor’s when it comes to their knowledge and preparedness. There will be many obstacles you’ll have to face, like working long hours on your feet, cleaning up people’s waste, watching old and young patients in pain, and making sure to administer the correct dosage of antibiotics and drugs. If you’ve already set your sights on becoming a nurse, you probably already know this, but it never hurts to check.

Understand the differences between pre-nurse and nurse.

Another thing to look out for when you start your nursing school journey is the significant differences between the pre-nursing studies and the nursing studies. As you might think, pre-nursing focuses on all the parts of nursing you should know before being on the floor of the hospital. These studies prepare a nurse before stepping into an environment that’s sure to be daunting and fast-paced.

Once nursing studies begin, the work will be more challenging. While pre-nursing courses focus on the right or wrong diagnoses, the nursing courses focus on the wide middle margin, where some symptoms fall into various methods of diagnosis. Knowing how to keep one’s cool while problem-solving is of the utmost importance, and will take both patience and knowledge.

Set goals.

As with any journey, academic or professional, setting goals is essential. Setting goals for each milestone is a crucial way to keep yourself on track. Once you’ve gotten yourself all the supplies you’ll need, it’s a great idea to be able to visualize your goals with daily reminders, affirmations, and intentions to keep some positivity with you as the studies become inevitably more intense.

Have high-quality supplies.

Speaking of supplies, the best way to start in a nursing school or any other vocational or academic setting is to have not only the correct supplies, but also the supplies that have high quality. Not only can it be embarrassing if equipment were to break during clinical or labs, but it’s worth it to invest in equipment that will stand the test of time. A little research can go a long way.

Hone your support system.

A support system will be absolutely necessary for a nursing student – for any student, really. If you find yourself stressed, depressed, or confused during your time studying, it’s so worth it to have a strong foundation of people around you showing their support. It’s great to have someone to talk to when stressed or feeling down!
